Welcome to the one-stop shop to find all of your college related questions. Everything from recruitment, Fayetteville, and college in general, with a few Tri Delta specific questions thrown in too. There are only a few more weeks until move-in day and we couldn't be more excited. Since the nerves might be settling in, we wanted to answer some of the most popular questions incoming freshmen have.
College Qs
How do I handle homesickness during my first semester?
It is completely normal to miss home, and almost everyone experiences it, even if they don't show it on social media. The best remedy is to stay busy and make your new space feel like home. Fill your room with familiar photos, establish a routine, and get out of your dorm room. Go study in a coffee shop, join a campus club, or hang out in your sorority house. The more you immerse yourself in campus life, the faster college will start to feel like your new normal.
What are the necessities to BUY for my dorm room?
Invest in the essentials that make daily life easier and more comfortable! A long phone charging cord is a must since outlets are always in weird spots. A high-quality mattress topper is an absolute game-changer for dorm beds. If you're sharing a communal bathroom, a shower caddy and shower shoes are non-negotiable. Plus, grab a sturdy umbrella for those unexpected campus downpours and a good pair of noise-canceling headphones to help you zone in during study sessions.
What should I say BYE to and leave at home?
Leave the clutter behind. Say bye to your entire winter wardrobe in August; it takes up way too much precious closet space, so just swap your clothes mid-semester. Most people do this over fall break. Coordinate with your roommate early so you can say bye to duplicate large appliances like mini-fridges and microwaves. Lastly, skip the overwhelming amount of decorative throw pillows. They do look cute for five minutes but will just end up on your floor every single night!
Fayetteville Qs
Where are the best places to grab a healthy lunch or snack between classes?
When you want something fresh, quick, and close to campus, Mamaka Bowls is the absolute go-to spot for the best acai bowls and smoothies. If you are looking for an incredible weekend brunch or a hearty breakfast, Prelude Breakfast Bar and The Farmer's Table Cafe are local spots that we love. If you're looking to stay on campus, Hill Coffee has great morning bagels and Where the Wild Greens AR has healthy lunch options.
What on-campus resources should every freshman know about?
The U of A has so many incredible tools to help you succeed! Head to the Mullins Library for amazing quiet study spaces, visit the CORD for free tutoring and writing help, and check out the Pat Walker Health Center if you ever feel under the weather. If you just need a place to chill or grab lunch, the Arkansas Union is the central hub of campus.
Greek Life Qs
Is balancing a social life and my academic career difficult?
It can definitely be a balancing act at first, but it is completely doable. The key is learning how to manage your time and utilizing the resources around you. Tri Delta prioritizes academics, so you'll always find sisters studying at the house, hosting study dates, or sharing notes for classes. Delta Iota also provides group tutoring sessions and many areas throughout the house to study in quiet or collaborative spaces. Having a structured schedule and learning to say "no" when you need to hit the books makes all the difference, but don't forget to give yourself the well-deserves breaks, too.
How quickly did you find your close friends after Bid Day?
Everyone's story is different! Personally, I found some of my closest friends on Bid Night at the house, but that doesn't mean that will necessarily happen for everyone. Some of my absolute best friends I didn't even get to know until sophomore year. There are so many stories of girls finding their group in all seasons of college. Don't put so much pressure on yourself to find your best friends on night one!
How involved is Tri Delta as a whole with their philanthropy?
Incredibly involved! Philanthropy is the heartbeat of Tri Delta. Our national partner is St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, and our chapter works year-round to raise money and awareness so that no family ever receives a bill for treatment, travel, housing, or food. From our signature fall and spring philanthropy events to smaller community give-back nights, every single sister plays a part. It is one of the most rewarding aspects of being a Tri Delta. Delta Iota was recognized this past year as the Most Philanthropic Chapter amongst the Panhellenic community. Out of the $500,000 raised by the Panhellenic chapters as a whole in support of their philanthropies, our chapter raised over $300,000 of that amount.
What are officer roles like?
Each officer position looks a little different. Tri Delta has 19 slated officers who all wear many different hats. These slated positions include everything from our Chapter President to Director of Social Events and Director of Lifetime Membership. There are over 100 different positions where each officer works closely with their director to keep our chapter running smoothly. These officers lead our chapter with grace and encouraging words. Their commitment to our chapter is unlike any other and we appreciate all of the work they put into Delta Iota.
Moving away from home and starting college can be scary, but there are so many people at the University of Arkansas ready to meet you. This is the beginning of a new chapter and you never know, you might just make lifelong friends along the way!
